I just received the only 416 8B driver I have ever owned and looking through the dust cap vent I see a hex head bolt glued into the center of the pole piece. What is the story here? Did Altec use the same pole piece for different woofers and needed to plug a vent hole for use in a Alnico structure?

Gauss had that type of bolt also! I might be wrong, but I think thats how they fastened the magnet to the frame!

I got a chance to look inside one of my old unvented gauss woofers and it also had a bolt, in the center of the pole piece!

Nah, the bolt holds the magnet together against physical shock. At least for ALNICO magnets. The ferrite magnet models were sometimes screwed and later glued together.

The entire magnet assembly for either is held to the frame with either 4 or 6 #10 screws around the edge of the pole piece. Early ones were phillips head, later were Torx.
